McAfee SiteAdvisor's downloadable tool and website provide detailed information to keep consumers safe while on the web.
When a startup called SiteAdvisor asked us to do a usability review of their innovative new product, we jumped at the chance. Once we actually explored their downloadable tool, we were hooked.
McAfee SiteAdvisor is an online web safety resource that provides safety rating information and detailed analysis for nearly every site on the World Wide Web, and also provides a downloadable tool that sits on your browser toolbar as you surf the web.
The core of SiteAdvisor is a system of automated testers that continually patrol the Web to browse sites, download files, and enter information on sign-up forms, and then retrieve and catalog what happens. SiteAdvisor specifically roots out elusive web threats — phishing scams, suspicious links, stealth adware installations and malicious browser manipulations — and proactively informs users before they fall victim to them. The SiteAdvisor team documents all these results and supplements them with feedback from users, comments from Web site owners, and analysis from their own employees.
This information is aggregated on the SiteAdvisor website, and for users who download and install SiteAdvisor's browser plug-in, also continually provides safety information in the browser frame as they search and browse the web.
SiteAdvisor's dossier reports use simple color-coded icons to indicate safety threats.
Just before SiteAdvisor launched their first beta site, they asked Filament to help make this wealth of information understandable, usable and attractive.
We worked with SiteAdvisor's design, marketing and engineering teams to create a new visual design system for the SiteAdvisor website, dossier report pages, and blog with the goal of making sure users could quickly scan the page and understand what's going on. We also developed simple overview pages to explain the download process, an animated movie that explains the product's features, and interactive quiz templates that SiteAdvisor delivers to help customers test their web safety IQ.
Launched to the public in March 2006, SiteAdvisor continues to grow, evolve, and keep a couple of steps ahead of the bad guys on the web. In August 2006, McAfee SiteAdvisor was voted one of Time Magazine's 50 Coolest Websites. Cool!
